Is Cider Gluten Free?

If you’re living gluten free, for health reasons or personal choice, you’ve probably asked yourself: Is cider gluten free? Here’s what you need to know — with a pour of Magners…

The good news is, yes, most cider is naturally gluten free. But not all ciders are created equal.

At Magners Irish Cider, we’ve been crafting cider the authentic way since 1935, long before gluten-free living became a trend. And we’re proud to say that our cider is not only naturally gluten free, but also bursting with the crisp, refreshing taste that’s made us a trusted favourite for all that time.

Apples in a basket
Question 1

What Is Cider Made From?

Cider is traditionally made from fermented apple juice. At Magners, we stay true to that tradition. Our ingredients are simple and honest:

Apples (17 varieties, no shortcuts)

Yeast (to spark the magic of fermentation)

Time (we mature our cider for up to 18 months)

And absolutely no gluten

That means no wheat, barley, or rye—just pure, orchard-born refreshment.

Why Cider Is Naturally Gluten Free?
Question 2

Why Cider Is Naturally Gluten Free?

Gluten is a protein found in grains like wheat, barley, and rye. Since apples are fruit, not grain, they’re naturally gluten free. And the fermentation process we use at Magners doesn’t introduce gluten either.

So when you pour a Magners over ice and hear that fizz, you’re not just getting a refreshing gluten-free drink, you’re getting a taste of Magnertism: that unique, infectious energy that brings people together.

When to Be Cautious

While most ciders are gluten free, there are a few exceptions to keep in mind…

Flavoured Ciders

Some flavoured or spiced ciders may include additives derived from gluten-containing grains. At Magners, we’re transparent about our ingredients—so you always know what you’re drinking.

Cross-Contamination

Ciders made in facilities that also produce beer or other drinks may carry a small risk of gluten contamination. That’s why choosing a trusted cider brand like Magners matters.

Barrel-Aged

Occasionally, ciders are aged in barrels that once held beer or spirits containing gluten. This can introduce trace amounts of gluten—so always check the label or ask the maker.

Choosing a Gluten-Free Cider You Can Trust

At Magners, we believe in doing things the right way – not the easy way. That’s why we’ve stayed true to our roots in Clonmel, Ireland, where William Magner first began crafting cider in 1935 with just a press and a dozen oak barrels.

Today, we still make our cider with the same commitment to quality, authenticity, and refreshment. Whether you’re enjoying a bottle at a summer BBQ, a pub garden with friends, or a quiet evening at home, Magners is your gluten-free go-to.

FINAL SIP

Yes, Cider Is Gluten Free - Especially When It’s Magners

So, is cider gluten free? Absolutely. Especially when it’s made the Magners way; with apples, time, and a whole lot of character.

Next time you’re reaching for a drink that’s crisp, refreshing, and gluten free, make it a Magners. Pour it over ice, feel the fizz, and let the Magnertism take over.
